Copyright Compliance Support

Did You Know?

Sharing copyrighted documents on BSMH Central, MS Teams, Outlook email or photocopies without permission of the copyright holder may infringe copyright.  Before you risk violating copyright law, use the resources here to determine if you are sharing copyrighted information and if your intended use needs permission from the copyright holder, or falls within the "fair use" guidelines.  Beware, modern technology doesn't make the copy right, but it sure can make the copy wrong, and infringe copyright!

Ask for help from a BSMH Librarian if you need it!

Resources for Copyright Compliance

Click to use the ALA Fair Use Evaluator

Use the above tool to understand, determine and document the "fairness" of an intended use under the U.S. Copyright Code.

Three Easy Steps to Copyright Compliance

1. Before sharing or using someone else's material in preparing your own, read the Bon Secours copyright handout "Are you about to infringe?"

2. Use the American Library Association Fair Use Evaluator tool above to gauge if your intended use can be justified under "fair use."

3. If your intended use does not favor "fair use" you need permission from the copyright owner and there may be a royalty fee.  How to get permission.
